Computer Class

Dear Students,

Thanks for checking in with Computer Class.

While you are working at home, you might be doing work on your computers.  Use good research habits.  If you are typing an assignment, please type using your keyboarding skills.

And above all, remember your online safety rules

3rd, 4th and 5th Grades:

We started to use Mavis Beacon again in some classes.  We will be concentrating on keyboarding skills as we finish up the year.  Here are some typing sites on the Internet.  Some are helpful for learning new keys.  Others are for practice.  You might spend some time on these sites.

If you have not already done so, please create the picture, and write the quote that you would like to have in the Yearbook.

1.  The picture can be made in Paint.  Then copy and paste it into Word.  It should be about 1 inch square.  (Look at the ruler on the side of the Word page)

2.  Include a quote; 25 words or less.  Type the author if known.

3. Type your name the way that you would like it to appear and a nickname if you have one.

4.  If possible, send the page to me at csowash@shgschool.org .

* If you are working on your research papers, use your best search and research habits.

Remember to:

Search diligently.  Don’t rely on the first site that comes up.

Use what you know about evaluating a website to choose the best source for research.

Think about:

Accuracy – Who wrote the information? Can you identify and contact the author?

Authority – Look at the URL ( .com, .org, .edu, .gov)  Are they considered a qualified source?

Objectivity – Does the author have a biased opinion on the subject?

Currency – Is the information current and up to date?

Coverage – Is the information easy to access or do you need to pay for the complete site?

Word Processing reminders:

Format, Paragraph - to Double Space

Insert, Break, Page break - to control when a new page starts.

Insert, Page numbers – for page numbers

Format, Picture – change the layout to move a picture around a page. (Remember to click on the picture to select it first)

We have been working on our Hyperlinks page.

Please open a page in Microsoft Word, answer the following questions about Hyperlinks, and send that page to me as an attachment.  My email address is csowash@shgschool.org .  If this is not possible, please write the answers on a piece of notebook paper and hand it in when we see each other again.

Please answer the following questions:

1.        Type the complete Google address on a page in Word and then a space.  What happens?  What can you do?

2.       Give an example of a class assignment where you might type a page and insert a hyperlink.

3.       Find this button on the Hyperlink menu.  What does it do? (Be sure that you have chosen ‘Existing File or Web Page’)

4.       The hyperlink can also be used to ‘link’ to a place in a Word document that you are creating. Notice that if you click on Extra Practice you will jump to another page. (Hold down the Control button)  Who did I thank there?

Then tell me about a technique that we did not do.

You can email me at csowash@shgschool.org.  If that is not possible, then write down your answer on a piece of notebook paper and bring it in when we see each other again.
