Why do "sea"gulls gather on shopping center parking lots?

There are many different species of gulls and many of them spend little time by the sea. Many of the inland gulls are ring-billed gulls and they love to eat out of shopping center dumpsters. Even gulls that live near the sea find parts of a parking lot to be safe and warm. They also enjoy eating what humans have thrown away and drinking water from puddles that form.
